Due to many requests, the club intends to expand its activities into girls football. To meet this demand a welcome is extended to girls born 1992 or younger to attend an outdoor coaching session (free) being held at Seven Acres Park, Newhouse Road this Sunday commencing at 10.00 a.m. We strongly advise that players wear suitable clothing and footwear. Further sessions will be held indoors early next year
One of Perth's most successful community sports organisations is to continue its runaway success by adding girls' football to its programme.
Letham Sports Club, set up under the auspices of junior team Letham FC, is still attracting droves of youngsters to its activities. It has 12 teams running, an increase from eight involved last season, including two under-10 teams-Letham Tangerines and Letham Whites.
Each enjoys a pool of 16 players, even better than many Premier League sides, and similar teams are run at under-11, 12, 13 and 14 level. There is also one under-15s team and the older Letham Amateurs, both with 16-player pools, totalling 200 participants.
For next season the sports club will begin its first girls' under-13s, having seen 35 turn up at trials recently. It will also be adding two extra boys' teams next season. Club chairman Ken Drummond said, `I'm over the moon as we've progressed from just having an amateur team in June 2002 to where we are now.
`My thoughts are this has been due to two things: there is a crying need for youngsters to play organised football; and the reputation Letham built up over the years of being able to produce many fine players who moved up the ranks to junior and senior grades.'
The club was formed after Ken retired and, with help from other volunteers including Russell Turnbull and Bill Hebner, started to create playing opportunities for youngsters.
He added, `The first trials brought so many young players we had to double up on the number of teams.
'In order not to discriminate, say by calling the teams 'A' and 'B,' we decided we would use the club colours to differentiate, one team playing in tangerine tops and white shorts and the other in white tops and tangerine shorts.'
Now the busy volunteers are aiming for a successful 2004 and, despite the constant influx, continue to say new players are welcome.

With the advent of a girl’s football team and the demands from youngsters wishing to play for Letham, the club requires even more coaches. The club therefore would like to hear from volunteers willing to give up some of their spare time to help these young players achieve their ambitions. No previous experience is necessary as the club has a policy of ensuring potential coaches receive the appropriate training.
